Capture menus and timed shots
Capture an open menu with its menu bar title, or start a region capture after a countdown so you can set up the screen first.
⌃⌘U⌃⇧⌘5
Some things only appear while you hold them open, like a menu or a hover state. Snix gives you a countdown so you can set up the screen, then captures. A menu capture grabs just the open menu. A timed capture opens the region selection when the countdown ends.
Capture an open menu
- Start the menu capture in one of these ways:
- Press ⌃⌘U in any app, or choose Capture › Capture Menu (Delayed).
- Click the Snix icon in the menu bar and choose Capture Menu (Delayed).
- Click Menu in the Capture Options toolbar.
- A countdown card appears in the middle of the screen with a ring that runs down, the words “Open the menu to capture” and a Cancel button. The Snix menu bar icon shows the seconds left.
- Open the menu you want to capture, in any app. You can open submenus too. Keep the menu open.
- When the countdown reaches zero, Snix captures the menu and opens it in the editor.
What you get
- The open menu and any submenus that belong to it, with their rounded corners.
- For a menu that drops down from the menu bar, the highlighted menu title above it.
- A transparent background around the menu, so it sits cleanly on any page.
Context menus and pop-up menus far from the menu bar are captured without a title.
Snix stays in the background during the countdown, so the menu you open stays open. The countdown card is never part of the image.
If no menu is open when the countdown ends, Snix shows “No open menu was found when the countdown ended.” Start again, and keep the menu open until the capture finishes.
Capture a region after a countdown
- Press ⌃⇧⌘5 in any app, or choose Capture › Capture Region After Delay. You can also click Timer in the Capture Options toolbar, or choose Capture Region After Delay… from the Capture button’s arrow.
- The countdown card appears with “Then select a region”. Set up the screen: open a panel, hover a button, start an animation.
- When the countdown ends, the region selection appears. Select the area and press Return. See Capture any part of your screen.
Set the delay
Open Settings (⌘,) and choose a Delayed capture time: 3, 5, 10 or 15 seconds. The default is 5 seconds. Menu captures and delayed region captures use the same time wherever you start them, including the shortcuts and the menu bar icon.
To hide the countdown card, turn off Show the countdown on screen. The menu bar icon still shows the seconds left.
Cancel a countdown
Click Cancel on the countdown card, or choose Capture › Cancel Capture.
Good to know
- The menu title strip is as wide as the menu itself, so it can include part of a neighboring menu title.
- A context menu opened very close to the menu bar may be captured with a title strip above it.
- Menu captures keep the full resolution of the display they’re on.
- To change ⌃⌘U or ⌃⇧⌘5, use the Menu (Delayed) and Region After Delay buttons in Settings › Shortcuts. See Capture shortcuts and menus.
